DIY Glowstick Brooms - Trick or Treat?

A No Candy Halloween Treat - should we consider this a trick or a treat? I'll let you decide! 

Halloween has got to be one of my favorite holidays! Anything that calls for thematic party scheming – count me in! There’s just something about pumpkins, fall weather, dressing up, and get-togethers that make it all-the-more exciting. 

Back in my Kindergarten teaching days, it was always so heartwarming to see my students get excited to see what their friends would dress up as. Not to mention how creative some their costumes were! It was always one of my favorite holidays in the classroom.

Today I’m sharing a fun treat for kids. I originally got this idea from Northstar's blog, and have reused this idea for many years back in my teaching days -- so rest assured - it's been kid-tested. Candy is inevitable when it comes to Halloween, but these Glow Stick Brooms are a super fun alternative. Plus, they can wear them when they go trick-or-treating! I don’t know about you, but glow sticks were my jam as a kid!

So let’s get crafting!

What you’ll need:

Materials: 

– glow stick bracelets

– black bakers twine (orange works too!)

– black felt

– Happy Halloween labels (printed on cardstock) 

Tools

- fabric scissors

- small hole punch

Directions: 

1. Print your broomstick labels + cut them into rectangles (or flag shaped like I did!), leaving enough space to include a hole punch. Using your hole puncher, punch holes in the labels.

2. Put each bracelet cap on. Be very careful not to crack the bracelet to activate it!

3. Using your fabric scissors, cut out 3.5″ W x 3″ H strips of felt. Then in those strips, cut out some vertical strips about half way in height for the broom fringe effect.

4. Take your glow stick and roll the felt around it. Using the bakers twine, thread through one of your labels and tie in a bow around each broom, securely tying the felt fringe.
